Directions for Giving the Task:

  1. Give each student a copy of the Reflection & Self-Check to complete independently.
  2. Instruct student(s) to choose a reflection prompt and write about it in the box and to rate their understanding/ability to do each learning goal. There is space for students to explain their ratings if they choose to do so.
  3. Use their feedback as a measure of success for the lesson.

Post-Lesson Knowledge Check! (20 to 30 minutes):
Confirm that the student can now identify and use proportional relationships.

Materials:

Post-Lesson Knowledge Check Task: Assessment - Writing a Novel, Revisited and (Answers)

Focus: MP1: Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them, MP4: Model with mathematics, MP5: Use appropriate tools strategically, MP6: Attend to precision, and MP7: Look for and make use of the structure

Directions for Giving the Task:

  1. Give a copy of Writing a Novel, Revisited to each student.
  2. Instruct students to work through each part of the assessment independently. Remind students to show/explain their thinking for each item and to review their responses before turning in their work.
    1. Feel free to read aloud any instructions or assessment items. The purpose of this assessment is to test math skills not reading ability.
  3. After students have completed the Post-Lesson Knowledge Check, review their answers. Use the suggestions below to help decide if they “got it” or are “still struggling” with this skill.

Directions for Scoring & Understanding Student Responses

Use the Answers key from the Writing a Novel Assessment to score the assignment.

You will base your next steps on the results of how well the student has learned the skills from this toolkit. The assessment is broken into three parts. You may consider each part as a separate assessment.

  • If a student demonstrates incorrect answers or partially correct answers with incomplete or absent reasoning, that may indicate that they are still struggling or not completely secure in this skill yet. We recommend that you re-teach this lesson.
  • If a student demonstrates correct answers or mostly correct answers with complete reasoning or modeling, that may indicate that they strongly understood this skill and they can move on to the next math skill.
  • If a student demonstrates quick and accurate answers with modeling and reasoning, that may demonstrate that they very strongly mastered this skill quickly (so they can tell you exactly what it means and how it works or they can teach it to someone else). This means they are ready for a more challenging skill - such as the real-world application suggestions included in this toolkit.
