The state board upheld a decision by the Adams 14 School District to deny an application from Be The Change Community School to open a charter for high school students.

Two new State Board of Education members sworn in
Prior to its first meeting of 2023, two new State Board of Education members, as well as two returning members, were sworn in. The board also elected its officers, naming Rebecca McClellan as board chair and Lisa Escárcega as vice chair.

Graduation rates

Statewide four-year graduation rate improves
The four-year graduation rate for the Class of 2022 was 82.3% – a 0.6 percentage point increase from the previous year. A total of 56,284 students graduated in four years, which was 442 more students than in 2021.

Commissioner Anthes has announced she plans to step down from her position in July 2023. She has served in the role since May 2016 when she was appointed interim commissioner by the State Board of Education.

Joyce Rankin

Board Member Rankin to resign in January
Rankin has annouced her plans to resign on Jan. 10. She was appointed in August 2015 to fill a mid-term vacancy for the 3rd Congressional District. She was elected in November 2016 to complete that term and re-elected for a full six-year term in November 2020.

Jimmy Lee Day II, the band director and instrumental music teacher at East Middle School in Aurora Public Schools, was announced as Colorado’s 2023 Teacher of the Year in a surprise ceremony at his school.

National Assessment of Educational Progress

Colorado outscores nation in reading but mirrors declining math scores
Results from a national math and reading test for fourth and eighth graders showed Colorado scores, along with the rest of the U.S., dropped in most areas since the pandemic. State reading scores, however, were better than the national average.
