Colorado State Board of Education

Overview

The State Board Relations Office supports the nine elected State Board of Education (SBE) members. The office:

  • Manage monthly State Board of Education (SBE) meetings:
    • Rulemaking Hearings
    • Charter School Appeals
    • Confidential Disciplinary Matters/Legal Files
    • Action Items
    • Reports from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE)
  • Organizes all appellate proceedings and other legal proceedings before the SBE, including:
    • scheduling hearings and conferences
    • managing all motions, orders, and other correspondence for each case
  • Consults, advises, and coordinates SBE proceedings with the Attorney General's Office including orders and other documents.
  • Reviews disciplinary cases submitted to the SBE by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) and the Office of Administrative Courts (OAC)
  • Drafts, reviews, and revises final orders.
  • Schedules, arranges, and oversees all regular and special meetings of the SBE, including:
    • logistics
    • compliance with relevant laws regarding notice and recording
    • coordination of materials and presentations
    • posting of agendas
  • Represents the SBE in meetings with other agencies, education groups, non-profits, and constituents.
  • Supports the SBE on strategic partnerships with educational entities.
  • Manage the SBE budget, personnel, legal services, official records, and hiring.
  • Handle all travel arrangements for meetings, conferences, and conventions: hotel, flight, rental cars, etc.
  • Handle all communications for the SBE office.

Office Responsibilities

  • Manage monthly State Board of Education (SBE) meetings:
    • Rulemaking Hearings
    • Charter School Appeals
    • Confidential Disciplinary Matters/Legal Files
    • Action Items
    • Reports from the Colorado Department of Education (CDE)
  • Respond to open-records requests as well as open-meeting act requests - as they pertain to the SBE office
  • Manage the SBE budget, personnel, legal services, official records, and hiring
  • Handle all travel arrangements for meetings, conferences, and conventions: hotel, flight, rental cars, etc.
  • Handle all communications for the SBE office
  • Represent the SBE in meetings with other agencies, education groups, non-profits, and constituents; support the SBE on strategic partnerships with educational entities.
  • Support the SBE in its work with the School Trust Lands
